I’m sure this huge amount is a small change for the secret new owner of the car. So what makes this undeniably cool car so valuable? It is not just a piece of art, it is a piece of history. The SLR is based on the two-time World Championship-winning W 196 R Grand Prix driven by F1 legend Juan Manuel Fangio, but with a larger 3.0-liter sports car racing engine. These were great machines, smokin’ the competition under the steady hands of the now legendary drivers. SLR won the World Sportscar Championship in 55, but was postponed a few months later after a major accident at the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

On that fateful day, a Mercedes driven by Pierre Levig crashed and sped through the crowd, 83 spectators were killed and 180 injured. To this day it is the deadliest accident in motorsport history, and the tragedy caused Mercedes to withdraw from racing altogether until 1989.

Rudolf Ullenhout, the chief engineer and designer of the SLR, converted the remaining SLR race cars into coupes, for use as daily drivers. The Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR, with a speed of 180 mph, was one of the fastest street legal cars at the time. One such vehicle, stored in the Mercedes-Benz Museum in Stuttgart, is the one that RM Sotheby has just sold for this record amount. The auction was by invitation only to customers that Mercedes trusted to take care of this vehicle.

If you missed your chance to own this once-in-a-lifetime thing of historical and engineering significance, don’t worry; The fancy fancy pants that bought the car wouldn’t drive either, though they agreed to make the car available for fans to look at, sometimes, maybe. It will remain the only other coupe from the Uhlenhaut in Mercedes’ Heritage fleet in Stuttgart.

Because Mercedes-Benz has a lot of money, the automaker has earmarked the proceeds from this SLR sale to create a scholarship fund dedicated to providing education and research grants in the environmental sciences. As the company that introduced internal combustion cars to society, it seems like the least it could do.
