Global shipments of computers and tablets are expected to decline in 2022 and 2023 under challenging market conditions, according to the International Data Center

Needham, Massachusetts, September 1, 2022 PC and tablet markets await turbulent times according to new forecasts from IDC’s global quarterly tracking of personal computing devices. Global shipments of traditional PCs are expected to decline 12.8% in 2022 to 305.3 million units while tablet shipments will decline 6.8% to 156.8 million units. Inflation, a weak global economy, and an increase in purchasing over the past two years are the main reasons for declining expectations.

Further contraction is also expected in 2023 as consumer demand slows, education demand is largely met, and enterprise demand is pushed up by deteriorating macroeconomic conditions. The combined market for PCs and tablets is expected to decline by 2.6% in 2023 before returning to growth in 2024.

“Although demand has slowed, expectations for shipments remain well above pre-pandemic levels,” said Jitch O’Brany, director of research at IDC Mobility and Consumer Device Trackers. “Long-term demand will be driven by a slow economic recovery coupled with enterprise hardware upgrades as support for Windows 10 nears its end. Education and blended work deployments are also expected to become a mainstay driving additional volumes.”

“With economic headwinds accelerating, we expect deteriorating consumer sentiment to lead to a further contraction in the consumer market over the next six quarters,” added Lin Huang, Vice President of Research, Devices and Displays. “An economic recovery in time for the next major update cycle may drive some growth in years off our forecast. Although volumes will not reach the peak of the pandemic, we expect the consumer market to move towards more premium products to market.”
